The mission of Edison is to provide customers with sustainable energy using the most efficient and environmentally friendly technologies.

Edison is the oldest Italian Energy Company and one of the oldest in the world. As far back as in 1883, Edison built a thermoelectric power plant in Milan's Santa Radegonda, the first in Europe for continuous distribution of electricity. Edison began supplying Milan's houses with gas as early on as 1931. In 1962, on the eve of electric energy's nationalisation, Edison was one of the largest industrial groups in Italy.

After almost 40 years of monopoly, European Union reforms have allowed Edison to return to its original mission of offering environmentally friendly energy and quality services to its customers. The power generation park includes highly efficient combined cycle gas-fired thermoelectric plants (CCGT), hydroelectric plants, wind and photovoltaic plants.

More than 200 power plants, 6,5 GW the Company's installed power, 8% the percentage of national production.

Edison wants to build a future of sustainable energy and to be leader in the energy transition in Italy. By 2030 Edison wants to achieve a production mix consisting of 40% renewable energy and reduce the specific CO2 emissions of its power generation park.

Hydroelectric

At the end of the 19th century, Edison built the first power plants in the country, that are still in operation. The renewable energy of water is not only Edison's origin: it also represents the future of our society. To invest in this sector on a double track: to work in order to consolidate and increase its position in the field of large derivation plants and to be committed to expand its own range of action through the construction or acquisition of mini hydro plants.

Wind

Edison has been active in the wind sector since 2014 through E2i Energie Speciali, a partnership with F2i Fondi Italiani per le infrastrutture.
In 2019, thanks to the entry into operation of new wind farms and the acquisition of existing fields, Edison has increased its own installed capacity from fourth to second place in Italy.

Photovoltaics

In 2019, we significantly increased the installed capacity of our photovoltaic park thanks to a series of acquisitions, thus laying the foundations for a significant development in this sector.

Thermoelectric

Edison has been the first in Italy to introduce combined cycle gas technology for its thermoelectric plants in 1992: an efficient and environmentally friendly technology, which guarantees the national electricity system the production flexibility necessary to compensate the intermittency of renewable sources generation.

In 2019 Edison has invested over 670 million euros to realize two state-of-the-art combined-cycle gas-fired thermoelectric plants: in Marghera Levante (Veneto) and Presenzano (Campania). The technology of the two plants will allow a significant reduction of the specific emissions of carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides compared to the average of the current Italian thermoelectric park.

Part of EDF Group

Since 2012 Edison has been part of EDF (Electricité de France) group, which holds 99.483% of the shares. Edison is listed on the Italian Stock Exchange exclusively with its saving shares.
